Timeless British Casual Elegance: Sunspel at Bulang and Sons
At Bulang and Sons, we live and breathe our creed of “Style for Watch Lovers“. Exclusive leather watch straps may be our forte, but it’s no secret that we like to think beyond the wrist. After presenting a number of exceptional garments from renowned companies over the years, we are happy to announce the British clothing brand Sunspel as the latest addition to our portfolio.
Style is not just watches and straps. It is the individual combination of the right timepieces, clothes, shoes and accessories like bracelets, bags or sunglasses that create the story you want to tell. At Bulang and Sons, we offer a thoroughly researched and expertly chosen range of products for modern living, and this includes extraordinary pieces of clothing like the ones from the British brand Sunspel.
Innovation and Quality
Founded in 1860, Sunspel was always destined to be one of the UK’s finest brands. Its founder Thomas Hill was nothing less than a fabric innovator who created simple, everyday clothing from beautiful fabrics – the Sunspel philosophy to this day. Coming from a hosiery and lace family, Hill set out to make high-quality garments in fine cotton while also pioneering lightweight and soft underwear as we know it today. His earliest garments include undershirts that were among the first t-shirts ever made.
By the dawn of the 20th century, the Hill family had built a strong business all across the British Empire. In this era Sunspel developed the Sea Island cotton fabrics sourced from the West Indies used in the most luxurious of its products. After WW2, the grandson of Thomas Hill spent time in New York – and John Hill not only brought the boxer short back from the US, he also managed to perfect its design.
Timeless and Modern
The now-classic Sunspel boxer short was immortalized in the famous Levi’s ad from 1985 with a boy washing his jeans in a launderette while wearing nothing but said garment.
A more recent and even more significant pop culture moment for the brand occurred via the film Casino Royale in 2006 where Daniel Craig – in his first appearance as a James Bond for the new millennium – wears several Sunspel shirts.
Lindy Hemming, the award-winning costume designer for the film, is quoted as saying: “I have dressed many different characters in theatre and film in Sunspel because the garments are classic, timeless and beautifully made. With Craig as the new 007, I thought it would be a perfect combination of quality and essential Britishness to have Sunspel create all his t-shirts, polo shirts and underwear.“
Essential and Unpretentious
Today, Sunspel continues to provide clothing for a number of costume designers, actors and musicians – and does not need to brag about it. Sunspel also makes a point of not showing a logo on their garments. There is simply no need for this essential brand to show off in any way. If you know, you know. The pieces are unpretentious in the best sense – their look and feel is what makes them luxurious.
These are staples you can combine with almost everything and every mood you are in, and they will never look out of touch. All handmade in England or Portugal in the highest quality and finest materials, the Sunspel garments we offer will be new favorites on your style sheet. For starters, we focus on the classic polo shirt and t-shirt as worn by 007 – but watch out for more from Sunspel at Buland and Sons!
